I think all of us have changes we want to make in our lives, or have tried to make in our lives, and there are those changes we’ve tried to make that didn’t last any longer than your average New Year’s resolution.

Those of you out there concentrating on living your life one day at a time may not find it very relate-able, but these days I tend to measure my progress by sustainability.  Is this something I can get up tomorrow and do all over again?

And I think about the causes that move me and measure my contribution by the same ruler.  Is what I’m contributing towards going to be sustainable and is this going to help people move towards transforming their own lives or is it a band-aid?

And please hear me – when we’re reaching out a helping hand I think band-aids can be important, but I don’t want to settle for that.

I remember seeing an interview in the “Answer to Everything” of a man who went to Africa and helped a school transform a cargo container into a solar powered computer classroom.  He said it wasn’t important to him to go over there as if he was important and distribute a hand-out, but he wanted to be a part of empowering this country towards being self-sufficient and solving their own problems.

And it’s stayed with me.  I’ve never forgotten it.

And I’ve never given up my own longing to be a part of the sustainable transformation of others, whether it’s here in the US or somewhere across the pond, I think the life transformation game is the sexiest game in town and here’s to playing it to the fullest!
